Domain History
Oluf.co.uk Ltd was a company run by Oli Rhys throughout the 90s - even if it was originally called OlwyniOn! ;)
Starting as a TV, Video and Satellite engineer, Oli used his skills to start fixing other equipment, specifically PC's.
With hundreds of customers over the years around Gwynedd, Wales, Oluf.co.uk was an early example of what a great IT reseller should offer. Sales, Service and Repairs of Desktops, Laptops and bespoke networks. With a number of dedicated staff, and a very impressive turnover, everything was looking good. However, with dropping margins following the boom created by the Millennium bug, Oluf.co.uk stopped trading in 2003.
Personal History
Oli went to work for a distributor in the IT Channel. He specialised in supplying national brands with their IT hardware, imported directly from Taiwan. After a successful stint of working with a number of household IT manufacturers, he went to work for the UK's oldest National IT manufacturer, Evesham. As the North West Area Sales Manager, he would supply cutting edge servers and desktops to the NHS and the Education market. He also got involved with developing complex private WLANs to bring broadband to rural locations.
In 2006, Oli's life changed as he decided to move back to North Wales, having spent a number of years in Manchester. With family life about to become a priority, Oli went to work with the Public Sector as an IT advisor / consultant. The role involved setting up an impartial IT advisory service for SMEs. This involved advising on everything from online marketing - introducing the idea of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) - through to developing SQL database systems for companies internal systems.
After his success was recognized with a Best Welsh IT Advisory Service Award from the Welsh Assembly Government, funding for the service came to an end. However, the service carried on under different names until 2011, when Oli left the public sector.
His most prominent work was with rural broadband, when he developed the Flintshire Broadband Project - the whole story was caught by the local media. However he also worked on developing business networks such as the CH4 Business Club
He went working as a Head of IT for a local call centre, but with the recession biting, he was made redundant within 12 months.
Today
With 30 years experience of adapting technology to do something new, Oli is still finding new projects to work on.
His programming skills started with BASIC, z80 Assembly, and moved through to some dirty PHP and some very nice Python. Mixing it with his networking and administration skills means that there with always be a quick script that needs writing.
He still fixes electronics, and always has a few local laptops that need some soldering, even if schematics can be difficult to get hold of, legally! ;)
Finally, away from the IT, he still gets time to play with his motorcycles - his current 'beast' is a classic 90 VFR750 - tweaked to handle better and feel far more comfortable! He does however help out at his local bike shop A1motorcycles in Flint, Flintshire He maintains the website!
